49th Vice President of the United States

Kamala Devi Harris (pronounced "KAH-mə-lə DAY-vee") was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. She is the 49th Vice President of the United States, having been elected alongside President Joe Biden in 2020. Harris is the first woman and the first Black and South Asian person to hold the office of Vice President.

Early Career

Harris began her career as a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office in California. She was elected District Attorney in 2003 and served in that role until 2011. As District Attorney, Harris focused on criminal justice reform and advocated for the use of diversion programs for low-level drug offenses.

Political Career

In 2011, Harris was elected as California's Attorney General. As Attorney General, she established the Bureau of Children's Justice and worked on initiatives related to environmental protection and consumer rights. In 2017, Harris was elected as a United States Senator from California.

Vice Presidency

In 2020, Harris was selected as Joe Biden's running mate in the presidential election. The Biden-Harris ticket defeated incumbent President Donald Trump, and Harris became Vice President in January 2021. As Vice President, Harris has played a key role in the Biden administration's agenda, including initiatives on immigration, healthcare, and police reform.
