Plant cells are distinct from animal cells in several ways. Notably, plant cells possess cell walls, rigid structures surrounding the cell membrane. These cell walls provide support and protection to the cell, helping to maintain its shape and integrity.

Another characteristic feature of plant cells is the presence of large central vacuoles. These vacuoles are fluid-filled compartments that occupy a significant portion of the cell's volume. Central vacuoles maintain cell turgor, regulate water balance, and store various substances such as nutrients and waste products.

Significance of Cell Walls and Central Vacuoles

The cell wall in plant cells serves multiple functions. It provides structural support, preventing the cell from rupturing due to internal pressure. Additionally, the cell wall protects the cell from mechanical damage and external threats. It also acts as a barrier against pathogens and other microorganisms.

On the other hand, central vacuoles play a crucial role in maintaining cell turgor. Turgor pressure is essential for growth, cell division, and the proper functioning of cellular processes. Central vacuoles also facilitate nutrient storage and contribute to the overall shape and rigidity of the cell.
